Custom Platinum Engagement Rings

While some people may decide to select a platinum engagement ring from a jeweler, others may prefer to have custom platinum engagement rings instead.  Here are some considerations if you choose the second option.

There are four main facets in selecting a diamond: cut, clarity, carat, and color.  Once you decide on these, you can then choose the setting.

Let’s begin with the cut.  There are four different types of cut diamonds: round, oval, pear-shaped, and princess cut.  Next is the carat and, of course, depending upon your budget you can select from .5 to 4 carats.

Clarity is next on the list and this, too, is grade according to a clarity scale.  On the high end of the scale, FL means flawless while IF means internally flawless.  On the low end, is the letter I or imperfect diamond.  In between, you will find very very slightly imperfect, very slightly imperfect, and slightly imperfect.  Again, the clarity of the diamond can only be determined by a certified gemologist.

The color encompasses a scale ranging from colorless (for example D, E, and F) which is the highest color on the scale to light yellow (for example S through Z) which is on the low end of the color scale.  In the middle you have near colorless, faint yellow, and very light yellow.  The color can only be accurately determined by a gemologist who has the expertise in grading diamonds.

In order to complete the sequence of custom plating engagement rings, the next step is to choose a setting. You may select a prong, v-prong, bezel, channel, pave, or tension.

The prong setting encases a diamond with four or six prongs.  This is the most popular setting to date.

The v-prong setting allows for the diamond to fit tightly inside notches that are formed by carving on both side of one prong.  This is especially popular for princess cut diamonds.

The bezel setting requires that the diamond is deeply set inside the mount with the outer metal placed over the edges of the stone.

The channel setting allows for different cuts of diamonds such as round, princess, and baguettes to be placed along the inside groove of the ring.

The pave setting denotes stones that are placed next to each other in small openings on the flat surface of the ring.

The tension setting is quite unique in that the diamond is held securely in place by utilizing the small grooves that are cut at the ends of the ring.

Once you have research the four C’s of diamonds, as well as the different settings, you can make a knowledgeable decision as to the type of custom platinum engagement rings you would like.  It’s not so much a tedious process as it is ensuring that a certified gemologist grades the diamond before you choose a setting.  Once that’s accomplished, it’s smooth sailing from there.
